It is costly because it calls us to follow Jesus Christ, and it is grace because it calls us to follow Jesus Christ. It is costly because it condemns sin, and grace because it justifies the sinner. #4 The Church of Rome was able to tolerate the monastic movement, and even use it to justify the secularization of its own life. Monasticism was thus a living protest against the Church's secularization, but the Church was able to limit the application of the commandments of Jesus to a restricted group of specialists.
